The Health Insurance Game
Dec 20, 2008 Health Insurance
This video is a skit written by supporters of HR 676 the single payer national health insurance bill in Congress (John Conyers - Michigan). All other industrialized countries have universal national health care. Their medical costs are far less than ours are in the United States but their health outcomes are as good or better.
Americans have seen their health insurance premiums increase by 87% from 2000 to 2006 while their earnings only increased by 20% and the average rate of overall inflation was 18% during the same time period (Kaiser Family Foundation).
Why does your health care cost so much?
Data from the Institute for Health and Socio-Economic Policy show that:
1. The top seven U.S. health insurers earned a combined billion dollars - nearly triple their profits of 5 years earlier (Wall Street Journal, August 2006).
2. In 2004 top executives of the 11 largest health insurers made a combined million per year in one year (Weiss Reports).
3. The 20 largest HMOs in the U.S. made .8 billion in profits in the fiscal year 2005. 12 top HMO executives pocketed 2.6 million in direct compensation in the fiscal year 2005.
4. Dr. William McGuire, CEO of UnitedHealthcare had .6 billion in exercisable options at the end of 2005 (CBN News, Oct. 16, 2006) in addition to his salary.
30%-35% of each dollar of your premium goes to pay for: executive salaries, administration, lobbying, marketing and other non-health care related costs.
It’s time for privately delivered health care with public funding - like our Fire Departments and Police. It’s time for HR 676.

Renters Insurance - Does Your Landlord Cover Your Renters Insurance?
Dec 3, 2008 Renters Insurance
By Keith Mallinson
Renters insurance is a misunderstood subject which needs to be explained as there are many occasions where we rent equipment, marquis for a wedding, car or boat for instance; all of which could be damaged or even completely destroyed. Often people rent things with the false belief that some other insurance plan they have will cover them.
Now many people believe that when they rent a property that they are automatically covered on the insurance of the landlord. This is not the case and whilst he does have insurance, it is only for damage to the structure of the property.
This insurance does not cover your personal possessions or liability and if you cannot you replace them immediately, out of pocket then you need renters insurance. This can be a bigger problem where any damage to the building is a result of your actions at which point any costs will be the responsibility of the tenants.
There is in fact another reason to organizing renters insurance. The responsibility for a person being injured whilst they are in the home or apartment you are renting is down to you and not the landlord so if medical costs or attorney fees need to be paid, the rental insurance will cover it. This means you are covered for that person’s medical expenses, legal costs if they should decide to sue, and any damages they might be awarded.
It is quite common for people to rent a car believing that their own insurance will cover the costs if there is an accident but this isn’t always the case or if they do it has limited conditions but a worthwhile check should be carried out on the credit card you paid for the rental on as this may cover the costs. For the cover it supplies, collision damage waiver is not expensive at anywhere between 7 to 13 dollars per day which you have to admit is a lot less than the cost of a brand new can that may need to be replaced.
Of course there are many more areas where rental insurance can be used even if you are renting sports equipment for a vacation. Don’t dismiss the decision to by renters insurance; the peace of mind of knowing you’re covered in the event of a mishap is worth the small price of renters insurance. How much you will pay will depend on many factors as with all types of insurance but you can guarantee that certain factors like location, company you decide to use and what your deductible is will all be relevant. Take a look around before you decide on what company to use and try looking on the internet as discounts are often found there and adjust the deductible amount until the insurance premium is within your budget.

The Obesity Factor – Costing You More for Health Insurance
Nov 30, 2008 Small Business Insurance
Most of us gain a few pounds each year, thanks to Valentine’s Day candy, Xbox, and Christmas cookies. But now those extra pounds just might raise your health insurance rates, whether you have an individual
policy or are part of a group health insurance plan at work.
Health insurance premiums are based on likely medical expenses, and overweight workers usually incur more medical costs than smokers or problem drinkers.
